    C4 Transmission Swap

I bought a 67 XR7 at an auction a few weeks ago. Nice looking solid car, but lots of mechanical issues to work out. One of them is the transmission. I doubt if it is an easy fix, but maybe, and if I swap it out I don't know what vehicles have transmissions that interchange.

It goes in gear fine. After it warms up it might be OK. Driving it around the block a few times it is obvious something is seriously wrong. Start from a stop sign, accelerate, all is good. Back off the gas about the time it should shift to 2nd, it seems to freewheel. Step on the gas again, it's like it is neutral. Stop, start over. same thing. Stop, step on the brakes hard, stall seems about right at something around 1800 rpm max. Stop, power brake lightly enough to hold car....light up tire (no posi). Back up to turn around, high rpm's needed to get it to back up. Stop, try again, all normal. Standing start no power brake, squeal a tire slightly and keeping it floored, chirp into second. Not sure what it does into third ' cause out of space. Fluid level is fine. It's junk?

I'm as much interested in saving time as money. I have to change the rear oil seal of the engine anyway. I know i could rebuild it, but it took me a long time to do my 65 Buick tranny trying to find time. I'm thinking I would swap in a expected good C4. I can find them easy enough in my local classifieds. My problem is I'm not confident I know what fits. What models and what years Ford/Lincoln/Mercury would be the same? I've tried to locate a C4 model guide to show what interchanges, but no luck. Anyone know off hand or can direct me to a web page?

    I also need some parts.

Driver side shock tower to cowl cross member
    Power brake booster
Left rear wheel opening trim (very good to excellent)
Power steering pump (I guess...valve and cylinder look new but power steering doesn't work)

Do you know what transmission is in the car right now? Is it an FMX?

Any FMX or C4 with a small block housing will fit (289, 302, 351W). Rather than buy a used unknown I think you are better off in the long run just rebuilding it yourself. It's not as hard as you might think, and it would only cost your around $400 and a few days hard work. Lots of good video's and books to walk you through it......

Just make sure you get a C4 with the correct output splines. Early models had 24 and later had 26.

    Year & Model breakdown:

    • 1964–1966 Select Shift, 24/24 spline, castings: C4, C5, C6
    • 1967–1969 Select Shift, 24/24 spline, castings: C7, C8, C9
    • 1970–1970 Select Shift, 26/26 spline, castings: D0
    • 1971–1979 Select Shift, 26/24 spline, castings: D1, D2, D3, D4, D5, D6, D7, D8, D9
