    8.8 Swap?

Here's the skinny. '68 8" is 59.25 inches wide. 2001 Expedition 8.8" is 63 inches give or take half an inch. Can I make up the difference with backspacing on the wheels or would it have to be cut down to 59 inches in width and why?

Hopefully this is an easy question to answer as I am trying to either keep or off load this rear end in the next 6 hours.

Thank you in advance for any info!

Yes, you can make up ~2" with backspacing, no you do not need to cut it down unless the offset pumpkin hits the floor pan/trans tunnel.

I have not heard of an Expedition 8.8 swap, I however cut my Explorer 8.8 down on the long side to accept a short side axle (FREEBIE). This centered the pumpkin and gave me a ton of room to run a deep rim and wide tires on my 67.

    Hope that helps a bit...

That's the same thought process I had. I did however get rid of the Expedition 8.8 and going to a localish junkyard to hopefully find an explorer one since it's 1000x easier to find info on those. If you don't mind sharing do you run the stock size 11" I believe disc up front and 11" explorer rear disc at the same time?

Im running 2015 Mustang GT 13.2" fronts and the stock 96 Exploder rears on the Panther and 70 Mustang disks on the Roadkill. Once it gets the Exploder rear Ill keep it full length and run the factory disks as well... Panther is setup for street and road courses while Roadkill will see sand and loose dirt with some street action to and from the trails/dunes.

    Re: 8.8 Swap?

Hey Andy... Panther is currently sitting on 18x9.5 5" BS Boss 338 rears with a 275/35/18 tire. I have fit my buddies 295/30/18 rears on her without issue, same wheel, but spacers are needed to correct the backspacing. I am going to do a mini tub on her to try and fit Nitto 315s for track purposes. After I destroy the 275s Ill be running 295s on the street with a custom backspacing.

Roadkill will be running a full length Exploder 8.8 with 31/10.5/15 MTs on a 15x8 3.75 BS Pro-comp rim BUT she has re-arched and flared quarters planned and will be running enough lift that the tires will not be an issue in the rear.

I just need to win the lottery, this new job is really zapping my "play time"

Great! Thanks. I have my 8.8 all cut down and ready to install after I fix some rust issues back there.

    Re: 8.8 Swap?

I had a set of 338's 18X9.5 with -4 mm offset on a stock 68 8" rear, noo problems, but if you are putting in a wider rearaxle, then more backspacing will be needed.
The best thing to do, is get the axle mounted, then measure what width and backspacing you want to suit your car and likings
