Lunch with Eddie Schartman in Cleveland, Ohio. I spent Tuesday 4-20-2010 traveling. Traveling to have lunch and Cougar talk with Fast Eddie. Traveling on 4 flights to get to and from Cleveland thru Chicago was a treat of it's own. But the highlight of the day was the few hours spent with The Living Lincoln/Mercury Legend Fast Eddie Schartman reminiscing Boss 429 Cougar times and his beginning days of what we know as Pro Stock. Remember this guy stepped from running Factory sponsored blown funny cars to a door car. He describes the car as ahead of it's time, and that the Boss 429 was indestructible as compared to the SOHC engine that broke parts constantly, but the Cougar was to heavy, long wheel base, and just plain big even with it's factory fiberglass components. More to come on developments from the day. I will say Eddie is excited to see this project finished and has stepped on-board for advice on it's originality. He totally supports the project at hand. I have also secured Sole rights to running Fast Eddie Schartman's name on the Blue and Yellow 69/70 Cougar. My ducks are now almost lined up as we continue to sign on manufactures to have this car done and running at the Bakersfield March Meet for an outstanding show in Nostalgia Pro Stock.

Where did you meet up with him here?

We met for lunch at the Sheridan Hotel Time Out restaurant across the street from the air port and 15 minutes from Eddie's Auto Mall.

Thats cool. You don't often get to meet childhood heros. I hope you got some pictures.

I spent some time with Dyno Don Nicholson back in 2001. He said the Boss 429 was a pig, they replaced it with a 427 wedge engine after a few months, then gave up on the Cougar when the Maverick came out.

Don and me in front of my former '68 1/2 R code at the All Ford Expo in 2001.

What happened to Eddie's Boss 429 Cougar? We watched him get his start at the local drags. He raced with another guy named Charlie, can't remember the last name.

I'm sure that is a lunch date you won't soon forget. Glad to see you get some one on one time with Eddie as I'm sure he provided some valuable info to get the Cougar project together. I already have a picture in my mind of a match race between his Boss 429 Mavrick and the Boss 429 Cougar.:sun:

There, is one I have not thought of....... I doubt Frank will run his Maverick...... But I would match race the car with legal cube engine as mine will be 432 inches. He has in his arsenal a 604 Boss. 7 to 7.5 Lbs per cube I'm entered !!!!!! Let's do it ........ Something like this could be as big deal for a cover shot :)

Were you at Carlisle last year when Frank had Fast Eddie sign the car? I missed going just didn't have the funds. He sent me a few pics. Franks a good guy and that's a wicked cool Maverick. Last we talked over the winter he said he was thinking about selling it. I hope not. He put alot into the resto. End result is one badass ride!!

Dyno Don never had a Boss 9 in the Maverick. It was always a 427 SOHC. Boss 9 was never competitive until Dyno Don put one in a Pinto. It probably didn't hurt that Jon Kasse was his mechanic either.

Thanks for the photo Royce, I wonder what 1/4 mile times it ran.

Most of the top Pro Stock cars were capable of 8.40's. Nicholson won a lot of races around 8.70 / 150 MPH.

I thought it would be single digit times with a car like that. Thanks again.

Here is a link to never before seen pictures of the Cougar. These were given to me as transparencies in medium format by Eddie. Taken by Jon Asher in a photo shoot first quarter 1970 somewhere near LA. and never used.
